Pumps and Dispensers
Compac builds two types of units for supplying fuel: pumps and dispensers.
Pumps
Pumps contain built-in suction units that draw fuel from either underground or above-ground tanks. Models can be identified by a “P” at the end of the name. Each hose has its own flow meter and electronics to measure fuel delivery. In Australia, pumps are often referred to as bowsers.
Dispensers
Fuel is delivered through the dispenser under pressure, using either a submersible turbine pump located inside the tank or an external above-ground transfer pump. This setup is commonly known as a pressure system. Dispenser models can be identified by an “S” at the end of the model name.
Releasing Fuel
When connected to a Controller or Payment Terminal, a Pump or Dispenser will only release fuel once authorisation is granted. If not connected to either, it operates in standalone mode—fuel is dispensed as soon as the nozzle is lifted. In both cases, the unit measures and displays the volume of fuel delivered.

Controllers
The C5000
The C5000 is Compac’s core electronics platform used throughout the Compac Product Range that controls fuel dispensing, transaction processing, and communication between pumps, payment terminals, and controllers. It acts as the central processor in all Compac equipment, managing functions like metering, pricing, and data transmission. Depending on the application, it's referred to as C5K (in pumps and dispensers) or COM5 (in controllers and terminals).
The C5000 can be used in three distinct applications:
Pumps and Dispensers
In this setup, the C5K handles control and calculation of fuel dispensed. It displays price and volume on the LCD screen and connects to a Payment Terminal, Fuel Management System, or Point of Sale via pump communications.
Unattended Refueling Systems and Payment Terminals
When used in a controller or terminal, the C5000 is referred to as the COM5.
- In an unattended refueling system, it authorises the pump or dispenser and processes the transaction.
- In a Payment Terminal, it supports card authorisation via CompacOnline and bank transactions via Windcave.
Hybrid
In this configuration, the C5000 performs both roles: COM5 Controller and C5K Pump electronics.
Examples include:
- Fillmaster: A cost-effective, integrated unit that functions as both a Pump/Dispenser and a Fuel Management System, with connectivity to CompacOnline or CompacOnsite.
- COMFILL V2: A Fuel Management System that works with external pumps, motors, and flow meters, also compatible with CompacOnline or CompacOnsite.
Dispenser/Pump System Components
Volume Registers
A volume register is a component in a fuel dispenser that accurately measures and records the total amount of fuel delivered during a transaction. It typically works by using an internal flow meter to track the fuel flow, then calculates and displays the cumulative volume dispensed. This data is used for billing, reporting, and integration with payment and monitoring systems.
Models
VOLUME REGISTER (standard)
The Compac Volume Register is designed for bulk diesel refuelling of tankers at depot sites. Each unit includes a card reader or other authorisation device, and connects to CompacOnline via the Compac Communicator Controller.
Key features include:
- Flow modulation to manage high flow rates
- Bill of Lading printer for transaction documentation
VOLUME REGISTER Ex
The Volume Register Ex has all the features of the Volume Register but is certified for installation in a hazardous area.
Tank Dispensers
A Tank Dispenser is a fuel dispensing system that is integrated into the body of a fuel storage tank, rather than being a separate, free-standing unit.
Models
MASTER tank dispenser
The MASTER Tank Dispenser is available in both pump and dispenser configurations and is designed to be built into the tank, rather than mounted externally.
This internal installation gives the tank a streamlined appearance while retaining the full functionality of a standard pump or dispenser.
It is supplied with blank panels, and the displays and nozzle holders are provided separately with extended cables for external mounting—giving customers a familiar user experience.
The Tank Dispenser supports communication with a Controller or Payment Terminal using either the Compac Forecourt Pump Protocol or the Gilbarco Protocol.
Tank Kit
A Tank Kit is a set of components that enables a compatible tank to operate as a Tank Dispenser.
It includes all the internal elements of a standard pump or dispenser—such as C5K electronics, meters, and solenoids—supplied loose for integration into the tank by the installer. This approach is ideal when a full Tank Pump or Dispenser cannot be installed.
The installer provides custom pipework to suit the specific setup. While the Tank Kit has no external enclosure, it delivers the same functionality as a complete unit.
Compac designs each Tank Kit to meet the customer’s specifications. The system can communicate with a Controller or Payment Terminal via either the Compac Forecourt Pump Protocol or the Gilbarco Protocol.
Flow Meters
Compac manufactures its own range of flow meters, designed for use by customers and by fuel dispenser fabricators or installers who need to connect them to other brands of pumps and dispensers.
Three models are available, each suited to different flow rate requirements. All Compac meters are certified for trade use under Weights and Measures regulations.

Rack dispensers
Compac rack dispensers are multi-hose units specifically engineered to integrate seamlessly into tank designs. Supplied fully assembled and tested, they arrive ready for installation—eliminating the need for onsite meter mounting or pipework fabrication.
Supplied without exterior panels, the RACK Dispenser is available in 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-hose configurations, suitable for: diesel and AdBlue.
Highly customisable, it can be tailored to meet specific customer requirements. RACK Dispensers support communication with a controller or payment terminal via either the Compac Forecourt Pump Protocol or the Gilbarco Protocol.
Payment systems
Payment terminals (retail)
Payment terminals are used at unattended retail sites accessed by the public, typically with multiple dispensers connected to a single terminal.
Customers can pay using credit, debit, or EFTPOS cards, or other authorised methods. Many terminals also accept white cards issued to commercial operators.
The customer selects the pump they wish to use, and the terminal authorises access to the dispenser.
Transactions are processed via:
- WINDCAVE for standard bank card payments
- CompacOnlineV2 for white card transactions
A receipt can be issued once fueling is complete.

Unattended Refueling Systems (Commercial)
Unattended Refueling Systems are used on unattended commercial sites mostly by truck drivers or commercial operators.
They can use a White Card or other authorization method to pay for fuel. A White Card is hosted on CompacOnline. It is issued by a fuel supplier and allows the authorised user to take fuel at their facility. The fuel supplier has access to CompacOnline so they can invoice the user for the fuel. White Cards are also used by companies who have their own refueling facility, allowing them to control and track fuel usage in their fleet.
The Unattended Payment Terminal authorizes the card and processes the transaction on CompacOnlineV2.

The system is approved for use in hazardous areas, making it suitable for aviation applications.
COMMUNICATOR CONTROLLER
The COMMUNICATOR CONTROLLER system consists of a COM5 (C5000) Controller built into a small enclosure that is installed outside the hazardous area and connected to pumps with a comms cable. It has a wireless modem to connect to CompacOnsite or CompacOnline.
The Communicator Controller is used when an authorisation method (i.e. card reader, etc.) is required on each pump that is connected, as opposed to authorising all pumps from a single source such as a Payment Terminal or COMFILL.
Used for aviation applications as well as Volume Registers which require a card reader on the pump.
Communication Methods (Comms)
Pumps and dispensers communicate with controllers or payment terminals using specific protocols. These define how data is exchanged to authorise transactions, control fuel delivery, and ensure accurate operation.
Pump Protocol
Pumps and dispensers communicate with payment terminals or unattended refuelling controllers using a defined communication language called a pump protocol.
Compac Forecourt Pump Protocol
Compac uses its own protocol, known as the Compac Forecourt Pump Protocol (also referred to as the PEC protocol, named after its original developer, PEC). All pumps in New Zealand use this protocol for communication.
Other Protocols
Other manufacturers use different protocols:
- Gilbarco uses the Gilbarco protocol
- Dresser Wayne uses the DART protocol
Compac has developed interfaces that convert between protocols, allowing cross-brand compatibility.
Compatibility
- Compac Payment Terminals and Unattended Controllers can communicate with Gilbarco and Dresser Wayne pumps using their native protocols.
- Compac Pumps can communicate with third-party terminals using the Gilbarco or DART protocols.
Communication Methods
Protocols operate over different physical communication mediums:
- Compac Protocol:
- Current loop (up to 100m)
- RS485 (over 100m)
- Gilbarco Protocol:
- 4–20 mA current loop (also known as 2-wire)
- DART Protocol:
- RS485
Wiring configuration differs by protocol:
- Compac pumps use parallel wiring
- Gilbarco pumps use series wiring
All pump communications are full duplex, meaning two-way communication between terminal and pump. Built-in error checking ensures the integrity of transaction data.
MODBUS
Compac systems also support MODBUS, a protocol commonly used for data acquisition (also known as SCADA), primarily for diagnostic purposes.
MODBUS is not considered a pump protocol, as it lacks full duplex communication and does not include built-in error checking.
It is not used for fiscal transactions.
In some cases, both a pump communications protocol and MODBUS may be supported by the same application.
Software
Cloud-based platforms
CompacOnline V2
This is the Compac web host. Compac’s Unattended refuelling systems connect to it via the internet. It authorises cards, processes transactions and stores data in the cloud in real time (similar to what happens when you present a card at a WINDCAVE Card reader)
CompacOnsite
CompacOnsite is a free, limited-functionality version of CompacOnline, offering basic access without cloud features.
One key difference between the two systems is how data is handled:
- CompacOnline: Card authorisation and transaction data are processed and stored in the cloud in real time—ensuring they are backed up.
- CompacOnsite: Card authorisation and transaction records are stored locally on the device—meaning there is no automatic backup.
Compac Pay APP
The Compac Pay app is a mobile payment solution for refuelling at unattended fuel sites. It allows customers to pay directly from their phone, store card details, and access receipts digitally. The app can be branded with your company’s logo and colours to create a seamless customer experience.
WindCave
Compac uses Windcave (formerly DPS) as the clearinghouse for all credit card payments made through their Compac credit card terminals, like the OPT or CC DCA. Windcave provides in-store, online, and unattended payment solutions. It's a New Zealand-based company that offers payment processing for various businesses, including those using Compac equipment.
